Best Time of the Year to Play Phuket Golf

Thailand is a sub-tropical country with a temperature that doesn’t drop below 30 degrees very often in the year, especially in the southern areas. Phuket is simply blessed when it comes to sundrenched climates, although there are some times of the year that are better for golf than others, so let us explain to you the best time of the year to play Phuket golf.
Summer Season
We are currently moving into the summer season in Phuket as we speak. Historically speaking, from November to April are the summer “high-season” months when the island enjoys the most visitors. This is a time of year when there is little humidity and almost no chance of a rain shower. If you are looking to play golf in Phuket when the weather is at its finest and the major beachside destinations are at their busiest, from November to April is the perfect time.
The downside of this time of the year is it’s very busy. As long as you book your tee-off times well in advance by clicking here, you shouldn’t have a problem getting your desired time.
Green Season
Known for many years as “low-season”, recently rebranded as “green season”, from May to October is a time when humidity is a bit higher and there is a greater chance of rain. Many people have holidayed in Phuket for 2 weeks during this time of the year and have never seen any rain. However, the best part about playing golf in Phuket during Green Season is the island is very quiet and peaceful. You basically have the golf courses to yourselves and the uncrowded nightlife scene really is perfect for a great night out on Bangla Road.
There are negatives and positives to playing golf in both season, but one thing remains the same: Phuket is the ultimate holiday and golf tour destination at any time of the year

Thailand Golf Championship in December

Thailand is very fortunate to boast a large selection of Championship golf courses, all the way from Phuket to Chaing Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin. Although Thailand already hosts large tournaments on the LPGA tour, the highlight of the Thai golfing year is the Thailand Golf Championships, annually held at the Amata Springs Country Club on the outskirts of Bangkok.
This important Asian Tour ranking event manages to attract some of the world’s biggest players and names such as the charismatic Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and the ever-popular Spaniard, Sergio Garcia, who will all be playing at the Thailand Golf Championships between the 11th and 14th December 2014. Lee Westwood is actually a former winner of the event (2011).
The Thailand Golf Championships is the Asian Tour’s US$ 1 million flagship event. South African golf legend, Ernie Els, is also penned in to make his first appearance in the event. Ernie previously won a big event in Thailand at theBlue Canyon Country Club many years back.
The host venue, the Amata Springs Country Club, has been voted as the best course on the Asian Tour for the past 3 years running. Even Sergio Garcia has proclaimed his love for the course and can’t wait to get back to the ‘Land of Smiles.’
Thailand, especially Pattaya and Phuket, are home to some fantastic Championship golf courses. Red Mountain GC and the Canyon Course at Blue Canyon Country Club are Phuket’s stunning Championship courses. Pattaya’s selection include Siam Country Club and Laem Chabang CC.
We can book you the green fees at all Phuket and Pattaya’s biggest Championship courses, just click on the links to the clubs above to find out more details.
If you are a golf-lover visiting Thailand during December, get yourself over to Amata Springs to catch some of the best golfers in the world. Alternatively, you can come to Phuket and enjoy an exotic golf holiday, because as golfers, we would rather play than watch!

3 Phuket Golf Courses You Must Play

Whether you are coming to Phuket on a dedicated golf holiday or you are visiting here with the family and fancy a few rounds in between, playing the best courses on the island is the desire of most golfers. Although there are 9 courses across the island, we don’t always have enough time to play them all. Please see 3 Phuket golf courses you must play when holidaying in this beautiful part of the world.
#1 – Red Mountain Country Club
It’s been debatable for a while now as to whether the best course on the island is the Canyon Course at Blue Canyon or if the newer Red Mountain at Kathu is the best. Located near to the Loch Palm course, Red Mountain has become one of the most talked about courses in Asia since its launch almost 5 years ago.
Constructed on an old tin mine, which was Phuket’s main source of income a couple of hundred years ago, the views are spectacular, weaving its way through red mountains, with high elevation tee locations. The course is stunning and the facilities are world class. What is there not to like?

#2 – Blue Canyon Course
The Canyon Course at Blue Canyon has long been the standard bearer for 5-star golf in Phuket, and is easily the most famous course on the island, and one of the highest rated in Thailand. The course has hosted many Asian tour events with golfers such as Tiger Woods, Freddie Couples, Ernie Els, Greg Norman and many more gracing its fairways. The Canyon Course, known for its dramatic holes utilizing the canyon, is a challenge and a fantastic experience for any golfer across the world.

#3 – Loch Palm GC
Many people will believe that the Lakes Course at Blue Canyon is the 3rd choice on the island, but we disagree. Loch Palm at Kathu really personifies that special tropical golf environment we come to associate with Thailand. With many of the holes centered on the stunning Crystal Lake, the use of sand traps, palm trees and water hazards make it a tough challenge if you are not hitting the ball well. The course is always in great condition, and with the backdrop of the mountains, it really is a picturesque course as well.

Experience Loy Krathong in Phuket – 6th November 2014

Thailand is famous for its colourful festivals and events. The most picturesque Thailand festival of them all is Loy Krathong (sometimes referred to as Loi Krathong). Regardless of the names used, Loy Krathong in Phuket is a must see festival if you are lucky enough to be visiting Phuket at this time of year to play golf.
The festival drops on the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. This year, the festival drops on November 6th, celebrated across the entirety of the kingdom. Essentially, in the Thai language, ‘Loi’ means ‘to float’, and ‘Krathong’ means ‘raft’.
During the evening’s festivities across Thailand, the skies are full with colourful and fiery lanterns, thousands of them, floating up towards the cosmos creating a breathtaking skyline that can only really be appreciated by those absorbing the spectacle at first hand.
The raft is supposed to be constructed from bread, which is good for the environment, although banana leaves are usually the main material. Using the elaborately folded banana leaves and decorating them with candles, flowers and incense creates a quite beautiful and aesthetically pleasing raft. The ‘Krathong’ is lit and pushed out to sea or on a river bed, symbolically used to cast away one’s problems or sins of the previous year, as to start a new. After a few moments, the lit potion of the raft elegantly floats into the sky. When this is repeated by hundreds of other onlookers simultaneously, it is simply a breathtaking sight to behold.
Casting away the Krathong is also an apology to the Goddess of the Water for all the bad things done to the sea, rivers and lakes during the previous year. Loi Krathong is also ideal for couples, signifying a romantic moment.
Although the festival is conducted on every available stretch of water in Thailand, places such as Phuket are ideal locations to see in the festival. All the main beaches on the west coast will be a hive of activity on the 6th November, so buy or make yourself a krathong and join in on the fun.

Using Stableford for Your Phuket Golf

Those of you who have decided to play golf in Phuket probably won’t know that sometimes the golf clubs on the island have handicapped tournaments that everyone can enter. They are a great way to play the course, meet some local people and also to maybe win a prize or two. However, some of the tournaments in Phuket use the Stableford Points System to score the tournaments, which in all honesty is not used that much among golfers. So for those of you that don’t know how the Stableford System works, let us tell you how.
Stableford is actually a great system for those golfers who have some really great holes and some really bad ones in the same round. The system doesn’t score your bad holes, only your good ones. If you shoot a few birdies every round but with a few triple-bogeys as well, you’ll love Stableford.
Rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, as in stroke play, it involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. Unlike traditional scoring methods, where the aim is to have the lowest score, under Stableford rules, the objective is to have the highest score.
Stableford can have the added benefit of speeding up the pace of play, as once it is no longer possible to score a point, a player does not have to complete the hole but can simply pick up his/her ball and proceed to the next hole. It is a popular form of the game, especially at club level and particularly in the United Kingdom, as it is still possible to record a competitive score despite having the occasional bad hole.
The number of points awarded on each hole is determined based on comparison of the number of strokes taken to a fixed score, usually par. This fixed score is then adjusted in relation to the player’s handicap. Once a player has taken two strokes more than the adjusted fixed score, they may pick up their ball as it is then not possible to score any points on that hole. They can then resume play on the next hole. Because of this, it is still possible to be competitive even allowing for a few bad holes.
At the end of the round, the number of points scored on each hole is totaled to give a final score. The winner of a Stableford competition is the player with the highest point total. Final scores may be modified for all players using the Competition Stableford Adjustment system.
The scores are generally used this way:
Points              Strokes taken on the hole
0                       2 strokes or more over, or no score recorded
1                       1 stroke over
2                       Same number of strokes
3                       1 stroke under
4                       2 strokes under
5                       3 strokes under
6                       4 strokes under
Next time you visit Phuket for a golf holiday with your friends, why not try and use the Stableford Scoring System, because not only is it fun, but also a new way at looking at the game.

Why a golf holiday in Phuket is the best in Thailand

Thailand really has become a world-class golf holiday destination over the past 5-years, with such a high-level of courses in and around Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Phuket. Even paradise islands such as Koh Samui and in the north at Chiang Mai are fantastic places to visit, sample a bit of the local culture, and to play some quality golf.
Although you could have a great golf holiday anywhere across Thailand, what sets Phuket apart from the other locations in Thailand for the best golf holiday experience
Phuket's holiday atmosphere
Phuket is the number one tourist destination in Thailand for the ultimate tropical holiday atmosphere. The beaches, the choice of bars and restaurants, shopping centers, attractions and activities, all combine together to create an all-in-one environment that merges the best aspects of golf with everything you could expect from a tourist destination. You might say the same when comparing Phuket to Samui or some other similar type island, but Phuket simply has more across the board.
Merging tropical with infrastructure
As we mentioned above, Phuket is famous for its ultimate holiday atmosphere, but being an island can cause other problems, usually centered on infrastructure. This is where Phuket comes into its own. When compared to the other Thai islands, Phuket is head and shoulders above with its solid infrastructure. Whether it's the roads, the international airport, international schools, shopping centers and more, Phuket has everything, merging the beautiful temperate climate with a solid foundation and luxury lifestyle attitude.
The choices
Whether it's the choice of golf courses, entertainment zones, attractions, activities or restaurants, Phuket has a fantastic array. With Championship courses such as Blue Canyon and Red Mountain, mid-range courses at Mission Hills, Laguna Phuket, Phuket Country Club and Loch Palm, or the beginner's course and golf academy at Phunaka, Phuket is not just one of the world's most desirable holiday destinations, but is also a golf-lovers paradise.

If you are an American, you can pride yourself in the fact that the Ryder Cup is now the 3rd largest televised sporting event in the world, and that you guys did great but unfortunately lost.
It's quite funny because during the Ryder Cup period, many golf fans, new and old, reacquaint themselves with the old golf bug. It really puts you in the mood for not just a game, but an entire golf holiday away. At Phuketgolf.net we are the experts at creating world-class golf holidays on the island of Phuket, ideal for those addicted golf-lovers and even more so for those new learning golfers who want a real tropical golf experience.

Don't get me wrong, both courses are still an amazing experience for golfers with limited abilities as well.

What I like about playing golf in Phuket

Before I lived in Phuket full-time, one of the main reasons I would visit the island is to play golf. It was a great place to get away for a few days, or when I had more time off from work, a couple of weeks. If you are sat at home now trying to decide where to book your next golf holiday, I would like to share with you what I liked most about visiting Phuket to play golf.
Caddies and hospitality
I am from the UK, so carrying our own clubs around the course is standard. It can be a lonely and desolate game if you don't have a playing partner, and that's why I love playing golf in Phuket. To play all the courses on the island, you need a caddy who carries your clubs, cleans your balls, gives you solid advice regarding yardage and putting slopes while at the same time providing you with company.
The hospitality of Phuket golf courses is world-class. From the gracious staff and the course facilities that have restaurants, changing rooms, swimming pools, and even spas in some cases, the caddies and hospitality on Phuket courses is unparalleled.
The variety of courses
The choice of courses is also something I really like. If I just want to play 9-holes, I can visit Phunaka GC. If I am looking for a challenge, the island's two championship courses, Red Mountain and the Canyon Course at Blue Canyon CC are world-class. There are also a host of other courses that make up the middle ground such as Phuket Country Club, Laguna Phuket GC and Mission Hills Phuket. There is something for every person and mood.
Lots of things to do at night
A golf holiday for me is nothing if I don't have things to do when I am not playing. Phuket has a hedonistic array of nightlife charms with lots of bars, clubs and restaurants right across the island, but mainly in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Raawi. Because Phuket is such a popular world-class holiday destination, there are lots of things to do day or night when not playing golf.
